A Book Lover’s Guide to Miami
Tuesday, November 07, 2023Miami is a young city with an irresistible spirit, a coastal gem where the climate and culture have sparked a dynamic fusion of arts, literature, and culinary delights since its earliest days.
Lately, Miami is more vibrant than ever. There’s no shortage of diverse voices and illuminating stories lilting through the air. Look no further than the Miami Book Fair—which starts November 12th—for an example of why this tropical metropolis is a must-visit for bibliophiles.
Below, we round up some of our favorite spots, sure to enchant readers and writers alike—from cafes that double as bookshops to art deco hotels boasting sun-drenched reading rooms.
There are still a few spaces open for our Zibby Retreat in Miami, from November 17th-19th. Get your tickets here!
Sweet Haven Books in Historic Cauley Square
Nestled in the leafy Cauley Square district of South Miami, this quaint bookshop is one of South Florida’s best-kept secrets, offering a serene escape with deep reserves of new and used books. Hosting regular readings and events—and a full-service coffee bar—Sweet Haven Books is the perfect spot for creatives to gather.
Bookleggers in Miami Design District
Bookleggers at the Bakehouse Art Complex is not just a bookshop, but a cultural destination where literature and art collide. Housed in Miami’s premier arts incubator, the vibrant spirit of the city is on full display. The best part? All the books are free. That’s because Bookleggers is a nonprofit, donation-based bookstore where you can indulge in a wealth of stories and take home your favorite titles without paying a dime. (But make sure to pay it forward by recycling your old or unwanted books.)
Old Florida Book Shop in Dania Beach
The name says it all. Tucked away in Dania Beach, the Old Florida Book Shop transports you to the classic literary salons and parlors of yesteryear. The sliding ladders, sumptuous mahogany interiors, Tiffany lamps, and cozy quarters are all part of the allure. Floor-to-ceiling shelves are lined with antique and collectible books, with so many hidden gems you can easily spend an entire afternoon picking through the stacks. It’s not just a shop; it’s an experience.
The Betsy Hotel in South Beach
The Betsy Hotel in South Beach offers much more than a luxury, oceanfront stay; it’s a writer’s paradise. With great cuisine, a dedicated writer’s room, and a serene rooftop space, creative muses are never far away. Steeped in a strong literary tradition, and the pulsing energy of South Beach, it’s an ideal spot for both writers and revelers. And this year, The Betsy Hotel is the home base for our very own Zibby Retreat! More info here.
Books & Books in Historic Coral Gables
In no uncertain terms, Books & Books put Miami on the literary map when founder Mitchell Kaplan opened his flagship location in the 1980s. All these years later, it remains the preeminent South Florida literary destination, and a cultural hub where book-lovers gather for readings and events in a picturesque café and courtyard setting. The food is great to boot! This one is not to be missed.
Verde at Perez Art Museum
Tour one of the best contemporary art collections in Florida, browse through a trove of art and design books, and then enjoy a delicious lunch overlooking Biscayne Bay. Designed by world-renowned architecture firm Herzog and de Meuron, it’s the perfect backdrop for readers who appreciate the finer things: a good book, a great meal, and a breathtaking vista.
